When My Father Died, My Mother Felt Blown Apart.

An award-winning photographer, she threw away every award she’d ever won, telling me nothing mattered anymore.

Grocery shopping and doctors’ appointments were her only outings, and she moved through her days like she was waiting to die.

She spent long evenings alone in her apartment, which she said felt like a crypt.

She would have given anything for one more cup of coffee with my dad. Just one more ordinary evening in front of the television.

My mother believed in life after death and read books about the afterlife.

She looked for signs of my father’s continued existence, and occasionally, she found them.

They lifted her spirits for a day or two before the emptiness came flooding back.

Signs, she told me, were not enough.

“I want more from him, Jess,” she said.

She wanted to interact with my father directly.

She wanted evidence he was still part of her life, and the mediums she sought out were unable to give that to her.

That’s what sent me looking for an answer: is it actually possible to connect with the other side—even in the middle of grief?

I found out the answer was YES!

But not before I lost a soulmate of my own…

Death is a continuation of love and a brand new beginning.

The Teacher Who Changed My Life

Three years after my father died, I lost my spiritual teacher, former partner, and friend of 21 years. Allan Hardman was a Toltec Master who had apprenticed personally with Don Miguel Ruiz, and I had been his student, then his office assistant, and then much more.

Beloveds

Allan’s dying process showed me that while death changes the language of a relationship, it doesn’t end it.

Even as his body lay in a coma, Allan went to extraordinary lengths to get my attention. His antics included interrupting a medium I’d recently met while she was in the shower, prodding her to get out as fast as possible so she could relay his messages to me.

Those messages responded to my private thoughts, which I hadn’t shared with anyone. In the months following his passing, he helped me survive some of the hardest days of my life.

When he passed away in 2024, I compiled and published two books of his teachings through my publishing company, Spirit Wing Press, so his voice could keep guiding and inspiring seekers around the world.

Losing Allan forced me to confront grief in the most personal way. But it also showed me that love doesn’t weaken on the other side of death. If anything, it intensifies. I could ask him for tangible help and receive it. And together, we could go on creating new memories.

That discovery transformed my life.

Today, my work is devoted to helping people who have lost a spouse, partner, or soulmate discover that they don’t have to walk through the rest of their lives without the person they love.

Through my writing and the Forever Together practice, I teach you how to participate in the relationship in its new form—to communicate, ask for support, receive answers, and gather your own evidence that your beloved hasn’t abandoned you and never will.
